All Grade Teacher Education Program

Admission to the teacher education program is competitive. Students must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission; however, meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission. Completion of the teacher education program does not guarantee state licensing.

When you apply, for an application to be considered, you must:

Have a cumulative IUPUI GPA of 2.50 or higher. Your application will not be considered unless your cumulative IUPUI GPA is at or above 2.50.

Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher in your major. Your application will not be considered unless the GPA in your major is at or above 2.50.

NOTE: If you are a transfer student and have earned less than 24 credit hours at IUPUI, we will use the cumulative GPAs from all of the other colleges you have attended to determine your overall GPA.

Only major courses passed with a C or higher are counted. Achieve a grade of C (2.00) or higher in each of the following courses: COMM-R100 or C180; EDUC-W200*; ENG-W131; ENG-W132 or EDUC-E201; and EDUC-H341*.

EDUC-W200 does not apply to Art, PE, math, or science majors. EDUC-H341 does not apply to Art or PE majors. Art, PE, math, and science majors should consult their department advisors for specific prerequisite and equivalent course requirement information.

Elementary Teacher Education Program

NOTE: If you are a transfer student and have earned less than 24 credit hours at IUI, we will use the cumulative GPAs from all of the other colleges you have attended to determine your overall GPA.

Have a C (2.00) or higher in each course that counts toward your degree. Be able to complete all pre-requisites and general education courses marked with a "+" on the elementary check sheet by the time you begin the TEP. You may not begin the TEP with more than 18 credits left to complete including your dual/concentration/minor.

Have 2.00 GPA or higher in each of these areas: Pre-Professional Education Courses, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Fine Arts, and Physical Education at the time of application.

If you want a dual certification or an addition to your license:

The Learning to Teach / Teaching to Learn Program prepares successful students to apply for an elementary teaching license to teach Kindergarten through Grade 6 or an early childhood teaching license to teach pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3. Many schools prefer hiring teachers who have an additional area of specialization, such as, reading or special education. A student can add a certification or a grade level specialty to his/her license.

Field Experience

The next step in the application is to let us know which days of the week you prefer attending. Every effort will be made to place you in the option of your choice. As a student in the teacher education program, you will work in classrooms in local public schools; a commitment of two full days per week is required for classes and field experience.

Retention in the Teacher Education Program, Learning to Teach / Teaching to Learn, requires completing all professional courses with a C or higher. Students must also maintain a GPA of 2.50 or higher for the degree, professional program, and major area. Field experiences and benchmark assessments must be successfully passed. Students must model professional behaviors throughout the program.
